STMicroelectronics Announces Ultra-HD Ref Design with Google for Marshmallow Android TV
Turnkey design for secured and fast Android-TV deployments Geneva / 04 Jan 2016STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications, today announced an Android-TV reference design based on the latest Marshmallow operating system.
“The collaboration with Google aims at delivering a highly-optimized production-ready Android-TV reference design to operators and OEMs, enabling a rapid deployment of high-performance, differentiated, and compact Ultra-HD Android-TV devices,” said Philippe Notton, Group Vice President and General Manager, Consumer Product Division, STMicroelectronics. “The maturity and the flexibility of this reference design have already convinced several operators to engage with us for their Marshmallow Android-TV projects.”
The reference design supports strong technical arguments to scale up the Android-TV market, including:
- Google certification: Android TV / Google Mobile Services (GMS);
- Capability to combine Ultra-HD video with fluid graphics, ensuring a smoother Android-TV experience;
- Robust security foundation for hardening Android system and DRM (Digital Rights Management), as well as a unique trusted video-path architecture for high-level premium-content protection;
- Pre-integrated Quantenna Wi-Fi ac 4x4 for unmatched coverage and multi-room usage;
- Optimized power consumption compliant with the Europe and US energy specifications.
The reference design allows operators and OEMs to differentiate their boxes where it matters to end customers and operator services. For even shorter time-to-market, ST offers some straight-forward productization options through close partnerships with system integrators and scaling partners.
ST will demonstrate the new Android-TV reference design in a private suite in Las Vegas during the industry’s major technology showcase, January 6-9, 2016.
