Electronic speed controller capable of sensorless field-oriented control (FOC) algorithm

Solution Description

This complete electronic speed controller solution especially targets power tools applications with nominal operating range up to 26 V DC (Designed for with up to 6S LiPo battery pack ) with air forced cooling or power switches and shunts. It implements a full 3-phase motor drive solution capable of both sensor and sensorless field-oriented control (FOC) algorithm. Sensing is based either on current monitoring via shunt resistors, or Back Electromotive Force readout using MCU integrated opamps.

The STL180N6F7 STripFET Power MOSFET and L6398E gate driver form the high current power platform to driver the BLDC motor. The digital section based on the STM32G431CB performs sophisticated and smart control algorithm based on Field Oriented Control (FOC).

FOC algorithm offers the following features:

  • Better torque control
  • Motor current regulation in case of a fast load change
  • Vibration reduction
  • Active braking function
  • Better efficiency
  • Noise reduction
  • A real-time monitor of the rotor speed
  • Energy recovery during the deceleration

The FOC algorithms for the solution can be developed using the STM32Cube Motor Control Software Development Kit (X-CUBE-MCDK) with graphical interface for setting up and generating algorithm code and more.

  • Key Product Benefits

    STM32G431CB - dedicated MCU

The STM32G431CB combines a 32-bit Arm® Cortex®-M4 core (with FPU and DSP instructions) running at 170 MHz combined with three different hardware accelerators, rich analog peripherals, including integrated op-amps for for sensing, and advanced motor control timers to meet all motor control application requirements. The STM32G431CB is ideal for Motor Control applications.

    L6387E - compact gate driver

The L6387E is a simple and compact low and high side gate driver, manufactured with the BCD™ “offline” technology, and able to drive a half-bridge of power MOSFET or IGBT devices. The high-side (floating) section is enabled to work with voltage rail up to 600 V. Both device outputs can independently sink and source 650 mA and 400 mA respectively, with 50/30ns fast switching time. The device output cannot be simultaneously driven high thanks to an integrated interlocking function.

    STL180N6F7 - high efficiency MOSFET

This N-channel Power MOSFET utilizes STripFET™ F7 technology with an enhanced trench gate structure that results in very low on-state resistance, while also reducing internal capacitance and gate charge for faster and more efficient switching. It can sustain 32A continuous current (25C), or 20A at 100C.
