80W LED Driver for Smart street lighting using a 6LoWPAN network

Solution Description

This smart lighting architecture solution for outdoor and street lighting applications is based on an 80W high power LED driver with comprehensive power management and wireless connectivity with 6LoWPAN mesh networking. The LED driver supports LED dimming as well as ON/OFF control.

The power conversion stage is a High Power Factor Flyback converter based on the HVLED001A offline LED lighting controller with constant voltage primary-sensing and high power factor, and the highly efficient STP21N90K5 900V MDmesh K5 Power MOSFET.

The features of the LED driver are implemented by the STM32L071KZ microcontroller and the SPSGRFC-868 Sub-1 GHz transceiver module to manage wireless communication along with LED brightness control.

This microcontroller and connectivity module power are supplied by VIPER012LS energy saving fixed frequency high voltage converter.

External control of the lighting node is handled through a data concentrator unit (DCU) gateway based on the STM32F401RE MCU, an SPSGRF-868 module for sub-1GHz communication with the LED driver and a BlueNRG-M0 Bluetooth Low Energy module for Bluetooth communication with a mobile device.

The solution comes with STSW-LLL006FW firmware that enables remote dimming and ON/OFF control of many connected lighting nodes from a single smart device, demonstrating outdoor and street lighting control in a Smart City scenario based on 6LoWPAN wireless mesh networking technology.

An Android Mobile App is used to communicate with the DCU via Bluetooth.

  • Key Product Benefits

HVLED001A - High power LED Lighting Controller

The HVLED001A is an enhanced peak current mode controller capable of controlling high power factor (HPF) flyback or buck-boost topologies in LED drivers that have an output power of up to 150 W. Other topologies such as buck, boost and SEPIC, can also be implemented. ST’s innovative high voltage technology allows direct connection of the HVLED001A device to the input voltage to start up the device and to monitor the input voltage, without the need for external components. The device embeds advanced features to control either the output voltage or the output current precisely and reliably using a reduced number of mainly passive components. Abnormal conditions of both input stage, main switch and output stage are effectively controlled.

    STP21N90K5 - High speed, high-efficiency Power MOSFET

This is an N-channel 900V, 0.25 Ω typ, Power MOSFETs belonging to MDmesh K5 series of ST’s best-in-class super-junction VHV MOSFET technology, which ensures the best efficiency, robustness and safety margin for LED lighting flyback converters where the size of the DRAIN snubber circuit can benefit. This revolutionary, avalanche-rugged, high voltage Power MOSFET technology is based on an innovative proprietary vertical structure. The result is a drastic reduction in on-resistance at very high BVdss, an ultra-low gate charge for applications which require high switching speed, superior power density and high efficiency, and unequaled robustness at very high BVdss.

    STM32L071KZ - Ultra-low power Microcontroller

The STM32L071KZ ultra low power microcontrollers incorporate the high-performance Arm Cortex-M0+ 32-bit RISC core operating at a 32 MHz frequency, a memory protection unit (MPU), high-speed embedded memories (192 Kbytes of Flash program memory, 6 Kbytes of data EEPROM and 20 Kbytes of RAM) plus an extensive range of enhanced I/Os and peripherals. This MCU features dynamic run mode down to 76 μA/MHz with LDO and 420 nA stop mode with RAM + LTC (low‑power time clock). These features make the ultra-low-power STM32L071xx microcontrollers suitable for a wide range of applications with remote control, ensuring efficiency and standby power consumption compliance with energy saving norms.

    SPSGRFC-868 - Low-power Sub-GHz tranceiver

The SPSGRF-868 is an easy-to-use, low power sub-GHz certified module based on the SPIRIT1 RF transceiver, operating in the 868 MHz SRD band. The SPSGRF series enables wireless connectivity in electronic devices, requiring no RF experience or expertise for integration into the final product. These modules included a U.FL connector (for external) antenna, filter and balun. 4-wire SPI interface to external host, shutdown line and 4 programmable GPIO’s.

    VIPer012LS - Advanced voltage converter

o The VIPer012 is a high voltage converter smartly integrating an 800 V avalanche-rugged power MOSFET with PWM current mode control. This IC meets the most stringent energy-saving standards as it has very low consumption and operates in pulse frequency modulation under light load. The design of flyback, buck and buck boost converters is supported. The integrated HV startup, sense-FET, error amplifier and oscillator with jitter allow a complete application to be designed with the minimum number of components

STM32F401RE - MCU with DSP and FPU

STM32 Dynamic Efficiency MCU, ARM Cortex-M4 core with DSP and FPU, up to 512 Kbytes Flash, 84 MHz CPU, Art Accelerator.

    BlueNRG-M0 - BLE module

Bluetooth® low energy module provides a complete RF platform in a tiny form factor. Radio, antenna, high frequency and LPO oscillators are integrated to offer a certified solution to optimize the time-to-market of the final applications. It can be powered directly with a standard 3 V coin cell battery, a pair of AAA batteries or any power source from 1.7 to 3.6 V.
